WISDOM OF THE IDIOTS
The Idries Shah Companion Series
The Idries Shah Companion Series accompanies each of Idries Shah’s major books with a dedicated volume designed to help readers draw more from the original. Where the source book stands complete on its own, the companion walks beside it, opening its structure and deepening each encounter.
Every companion works as a guide to its parent book. It begins with an introduction to the work’s background – when and how it appeared, and the conversation it entered – before setting out the book’s form and architecture: how it is built, why it is ordered as it is, and how it differs from and complements the rest of Shah’s writing. From there, a clear, section-by-section path leads through the material itself, pausing in turn at each story, passage, and argument.
Crucially, the commentary is an overlay rather than a summary. It never stands in for Shah's words; at every turn it sends the reader back to the source passage, so that the companion becomes a lens rather than a shortcut.
Nothing is abridged, and nothing is explained away.
Idries Shah’s books were made to be returned to, their meaning unfolding gradually across many readings, with new insight emerging each time the material is viewed from a fresh angle. These companions are built for precisely that kind of patient, repeated engagement – navigational tools that reveal the design of each book, illuminate its connections across the wider corpus, and reward the seeking reader with more on every return.
